In a person suffering from stress, the normal functions of the immune system are compromised, thus causing an increased risk for infection. Stress also affects the cardiovascular system because the heart is forced to pump harder, which can cause high blood pressure.

When someone faces a stressful situation, the hypothalamus sends a message to the adrenal gland to release epinephrine, which causes the heart to work faster. This is considered as a fight-or-flight response that was necessary for survival during times of stress. However, when one stays in this state for prolonged periods, this can lead to serious health problems, including heart attack, stroke, hypertension, and diabetes. Stress can also affect the gastrointestinal system, resulting to ulcers and indigestion.
